I tweeted that there wasn’t an elected official in sight to great the President when he came to El Paso and then I quickly corrected that tweet once I saw the elected in attendance.

Despite the fact that she’s a lame duck, many expected to see State Representative Norma Chavez in attendance but she was not in attendance. Some have been critical of State Rep Joe Moody for not being in attendance, which he also would’ve drawn criticism had he chosen to skip a committee meeting in favor of greeting the President.

The only elected in attendance were Congressman Reyes, who flew in with the President aboard Air Force One, Mayor Cook, Congressman Ciro Rodriguez, and Congressman Harry Teague.

I spoke with several other elected officials in town about the Presidential visit and they explained that they had not been invited and those that tried to attend were not given permission to attend.

The reason why is simple, the Administration didn’t want to take away time from the troops. The more elected in attendance, the more hob-knobbing, ass-kissing, and picture taking. That’s time consuming and takes away time from the troops, which is the real reason the President came to El Paso in the first place.
So this wasn’t a case of local Democrats trying to distance themselves, its a case of the fact that the President was more focused on thanking the troops and getting back to Washington for his address to the nation.
